THe Seva Sadan Society…

The organization’s mission is to provide a nurturing and secure environment for vulnerable, underprivileged girls, and educate them, enable them to achieve their potential, enable them to be self-reliant, and break the cycle of poverty and social deprivation.

In the traditionally male-dominated Indian society, women from impoverished communities have long suffered gender discrimination, oppression, and abuse. The girl child is often neglected and deprived of a normal childhood, including her right to education and a life of equal opportunity.

As a not-for-profit organization established over a century ago in 1908, the Seva Sadan Society in Mumbai has been a sanctuary for such marginalized girls for over a century. It continues to protect, nurture, and empower advantaged girls and women with education, skills and opportunities not only to improve their own lives, but also change lives of their families and impact communities. Its focus today is to reduce the inequities of opportunity between the privileged and the underprivileged.

In 2020, the Society received the UNESCO Award of Merit for the restoration of its historic Malabari Hall Building. See media coverage of the restoration and the award here and here.
